Buying a New Computer
Mac or PC?
Aahhh the eternal question... Well, in a nutshell, the conventional wisdom as to whether to buy Mac or PC comes down to 1) Personal preference, and 2) What will be done with it. You could also argue about whether you want to give the evil empire Microsoft any more money, but that kinda falls under number 1.
Buy a MAC:
- If you are concerned about security, but don't want to spend a lot of time worrying about it
- If you plan on doing heavy work with photos, music and video
- If you've never had a computer, and are going to learn how to use one anyway
Macs are almost universally used in the professional graphics and music fields.
If you previously used a PC, and you have a lot of money invested in software, you need to reconcile that on your own.
Buy a PC:
- If you previously used a PC, and you have a lot of money invested in software
- If you have to rely on nearby friends for tech support, and they don't know Macs
- If you do office work at home, and specialty software is written for the PC.
Another fact to consider is that Macs are more expensive than PCs. One facet of this that people don't normally think about is that Customer Service from Apple is far and away better than that provided by PC manufacturers. You can take your Mac to an Apple store, and have personal service. Tech help is expensive, and that's why PCs are cheaper: customers wanted cheaper computers, so the PC manufacturers had to cut back on their service to meet that demand. Essentially, you pay for Customer Service when you buy a Mac.
