Buying a New Computer
What to do when you get it
Yay!!! The new computer's here! Before we get too excited, I recommend you do some basic housekeeping.
SAVE all the discs that came with it. Windows is expensive to replace. I don't know how many times I've needed a disc to repair someone's computer, and they say "I don't know where the discs are". The only option then is either to buy a new copy of Windows, or to buy a new computer. Just keep track of your discs. A good idea is to keep the box your keyboard came in, or other such box, and place all the discs and documentation in there. You might even label the box with the name of the computer; something you'll remember.
If you didn't get a disc for restoring the Operating System, take the time to look for instructions as to how to make them. Some manufacturers supply the files and the means for making your own discs on the hard drive. Make these discs as soon as you can.
Uninstall the Crap. Sorry... That's how I feel about it... Uninstall, using Control Panel>Add and Remove Programs, the software you don't want or plan to use. I include Norton or McAfee in that. I uninstall the bundled Anti-Virus, then install what I want.
Install an anti-virus program of your choice. You can also install any of my recommended software.
Use MSCONFIG to disable any unnecessary start-up programs.
Enjoy your new computer. Play with it, tweak it, keep it tuned up...
