The Start Menu : Adding and Removing Shortcuts : xp | Vista/7
XP
To add a program to the left side of your Start Menu:
1. Click All Programs and find the shortcut to the program you want in your list.
2. Right-click the shortcut and left-click Pin to Start Menu.
The new shortcut will now be listed on your Start Menu.

NOTE: You can create a shortcut from any existing location on your drive. In other words, you can navigate via My Computer to the location of the executable for that program, or any shortcut that exists. I even created shortcuts to an entire drive; i.e. F: drive. The important thing to remember is that when you pin the program to your Start Menu, you are linking to that location, so if you move or delete that original shortcut, the item on your Start Menu will be invalid, and will no longer work.
To delete a program from the left side of your Start Menu:
Right-click the item and left-click Remove From This List
