Using a Browser

Bookmarks and Favorites

Bookmarks (or Favorites in IE) are stored links to sites that you want to visit again and again. They can be organized in folders or saved as stand-alone links. There are several ways that you can save, manage and access these Bookmarks. You use this feature so you don't have to type in the same addresses all the time

Bookmarks are stored in a file on your computer. They can be accessed in several ways.

The Bookmarks menu item shows the list of bookmarks. Simply click Bookmarks, then navigate to the site you want to visit. If you are on a page that you want to save, select Bookmark this Page under Bookmarks. It will then be listed underneath.

You can also access your Bookmarks in a Sidebar. This will also keep your Bookmarks available at all times during your web browsing. Click View>Sidebar and select Bookmarks. This will open a bar on the left side of your browser window that contains all of your Bookmarks. This can take up a lot of screen real-estate, however.

In IE, the Favorites are accessed by clicking the yellow star to the left of the Address Bar.

The Bookmark (or "Links" in IE) Bar is the easiest way to access your most commonly used sites. This bar can be organized and added to by 2 methods.

The first, and easiest way, is to simply click and drag the address you want to save from the Address Bar to the Bookmarks Bar. You can even drag a page to a folder on the bar, and the new link will be placed into that folder.

Bookmarks can be deleted from this bar by right-clicking the link, and selecting Delete.

TIP: When Firefox is installed, it will offer to import settings from IE, which includes your IE Favorites. I usually do this import. But then, you will notice that the Bookmark Bar will contain links from the default installation of IE. I ALWAYS delete these default links, which include the following folders:

  • Customize Links
  • Free Hotmail
  • Windows Marketplace
  • Windows Media
  • Windows

The second way to manage links in the Bookmark Bar, and all your Bookmarks or Favorites, is to go to the Bookmarks Menu item, and select Organize...

This will open a separate window where all your Bookmarks are shown. You can then create and delete folders, move links around, and organize to your heart's content. These changes are made in real time, so when you are finished moving things around, you can simply close the window, and move on to to other things.
